The hand tells you how the garment will sit on a body; the drape tells you how it will move. A tweed with a stiff, papery feel is fine for a structured coat, while a knit needs a softer, more springy hand. Put the swatch against your intended pattern and see whether it flows the way you want.<\/p>\n
Weigh it: GSM tells you a lot<\/h2>\n
The weight of the fabric in grams per square metre is the single most useful number on a swatch. A heavier tweed around 380-450 GSM gives a proper overcoat structure, while a lighter knit is better for layering. Ask the mill to state the GSM on the swatch card, not just the colour. A swatch without a weight is a swatch you cannot cost against. Fabric behaves differently when it is cut, seamed and pressed. A tweed that drapes beautifully flat can stiffen at a seam, and a knit that looks light can stretch out of shape. A direction mistake is almost impossible to fix after the fabric is cut.<\/p>\n A swatch is a promise that a bulk roll should keep.
