Four fields decide whether a certificate is usable in due diligence. The scope statement names the site and activities covered, and for a mill it should name the facility address and activities such as weaving, dyeing, and finishing, a generic “textile manufacturing” scope that lists no site is a weaker document. The certification body must be an accredited one, so the certificate should carry the accreditation mark (UKAS, DAkkS, ANAB, and national equivalents) behind the body. The standard and edition, ISO 14001:2015, must be stated. And the certificate has an expiry date, because the audit cycle matters: a certificate near expiry has not yet been confirmed through the surveillance audit. Buyers can verify any certificate directly with the issuing body, which publishes the status, and that verification takes minutes and costs nothing.
One practical note: ISO 14001 certificates are site-specific, not company-wide by default. A mill group with three factories can hold certification at one site only, and the certificate’s scope statement is where that shows. If the supplier claims “our mill is ISO 14001 certified,” the correct follow-up is “certified at which site, and is my production in scope?”

ISO 14001 vs GRS: systeemcertificering vs productcertificering
The two certifications answer different questions and both belong in a sourcing file. ISO 14001 answers “does this site manage its environmental obligations through a documented, audited system?” GRS (Global Recycled Standard) answers “does this specific product lot contain the claimed recycled content, tracked through chain of custody?” One is about the factory, the other about the goods. A buyer asking a mill for “environmental certification” should decide which question they actually need answered, and for product claims, ISO 14001 never substitutes for GRS or similar product standards.
The mistake to avoid is stacking the certificates into a vague green halo. “ISO 14001 certified mill” in marketing copy is defensible as a statement about the site’s management system. “ISO 14001 certified eco-friendly fabric” is not, because the standard never evaluated the fabric.
In practice, ISO 14001 functions as a floor, not a differentiator. It tells a buyer that the mill has environmental management discipline, which correlates with other forms of process discipline, because the same audit habit that tracks energy consumption tends to track quality parameters. It also signals readiness: mills with certified management systems adapt faster to customer environmental questionnaires and to regulations such as the EU’s due diligence expectations, because the data collection machinery already exists. For a fashion brand answering its own customers’ sustainability questionnaires, a supplier with ISO 14001 makes the answers easier to document.
The sourcing checklist that follows is short. Ask for the certificate PDF and read the scope, site, body, edition, and expiry. Verify the certificate number with the issuing body. Ask how the mill’s environmental objectives are set and what the current ones are, a real system produces concrete current targets, not a laminated PDF. And keep the product question separate: for fabric content claims, request the GRS certificate for the specific lot, because no management system certificate proves what is in the yarn. Our custom manufacturing program starts at a 300-metre MOQ with a 7-day sampling cycle, which gives buyers room to run this verification before bulk, and ready-stock orders ship from 100,000 meters of inventory with the relevant documentation per program.
No. GRS certifies recycled content in specific product lots through chain of custody; ISO 14001 certifies the site’s environmental management system. Buyers usually need both, for different questions.
How do I verify a mill’s ISO 14001 certificate?
