The regulatory backdrop is concrete. In the United States, the FTC’s Green Guides set the rules for environmental marketing claims, and the European Commission’s work on green claims pushes the same direction: claims must be specific, substantiated, and verifiable. Buyers who apply those three tests to their suppliers are doing the regulator’s job before the regulator does.

Claim one: “eco-friendly,” the word that means nothing
The FTC Green Guides are blunt about general environmental benefit claims: terms like eco-friendly and green are nearly impossible to substantiate as written, because they imply the product has no environmental drawbacks, and no textile has none. Every fabric consumes water, energy, and chemistry somewhere in its life. A mill that answers “what makes it eco-friendly?” with a specific statement, this program uses solution-dyed yarn that skips a dye bath, or this wool comes from a farm under a documented welfare standard, is communicating. A mill that repeats the word louder is marketing. The buyer’s move is simple and free: ask the question in writing and file the answer with the order. Claims that survive being written down tend to be true; claims that evaporate in email were never going to survive an audit either.
Claim two: “natural, therefore biodegradable”
Natural fiber does not guarantee biodegradation, and biodegradation does not guarantee it happens anywhere useful. A wool tweed buried in soil will break down over time; the same tweed laminated to a polyurethane film, finished with certain treatments, or blended with 40 percent polyester will not behave like the pure fiber its marketing features. The honest question is not “is it natural” but “what is the full composition, and what happens to this exact construction at end of life.” Mills that volunteer full composition declarations, fiber percentages on the spec sheet rather than marketing adjectives, make the rest of the conversation possible.
| Claim type | Red flag wording | Evidence that settles it |
|---|---|---|
| Conteúdo reciclado | “Made with recycled fibers” | Certificado da cadeia de custódia do lote |
A factory can hold a genuine environmental management certificate, ISO 14001 for example, and still weave whatever blend you order; the certificate says the factory manages its environmental obligations systematically, not that your fabric is sustainable. The gap between document scope and marketing implication is where most honest-looking greenwashing lives. The buyer’s move is to read three fields off any certificate offered as proof: the number, the scope, and the expiry. A scope that covers site environmental management is real and worth something, but it is not a fiber claim, not a recycled claim, and not a biodegradability claim.
“Climate neutral fabric” is a claim that hides its arithmetic. A carbon figure means one thing when it covers the mill gate and another when it includes yarn spinning, dyeing, and freight, and offset-based neutrality claims have drawn regulatory attention in Europe precisely because the offset quality varies wildly. The professional question is not “is it neutral” but “what is the boundary of that statement, what data feeds it, and who checked it.” If the answer is a one-page footprint with the boundary drawn and the data source named, the claim is working as information. If the answer is a logo, the claim is working as decoration. Buyers who ask for boundaries get them, and the asking itself, repeated across an industry’s suppliers, is what eventually makes decoration unprofitable. For programs where documentation matters more than adjectives, our ready-stock service publica o que cada artigo é, os pesos, as composições e os acabamentos, em vez daquilo que possa simbolizar.

Perguntas frequentes
Environmental claims that are vague, unprovable, or broader than their evidence, from “eco-friendly” hangtags to recycled claims with no chain-of-custody certificate behind them.
No. It certifies the factory’s environmental management system, not any property of the fabric. Check the scope and expiry, and match the claim to what the scope covers.
