Årsagen er, at pris på prøve kontra bulkstof are not two numbers for the same thing – they are two different cost structures built on the same loom. Understanding what drives the gap turns sampling from a budget surprise into a planned line item.

Hvorfor prøver koster mere pr. meter

A sample run carries the mill’s fixed costs across very few metres. The dye house runs a small lot and purges the machines before and after; the loom stops one production weave to mount yours; a QC technician inspects 20 metres with the same rigour applied to 2,000. All of that expense divides by a tiny denominator, so sample fabric routinely prices several times higher per metre than the eventual bulk quotation. The colour match itself is a service: a lab dip round, and sometimes a second, sits behind the first metre of sampled cloth. None of this is padding – it is the cost of producing something custom in small quantity, and mills that quote suspiciously cheap samples usually recover the margin in the bulk invoice or quietly skip the QC step.

Hvor bulkprisen kommer fra

Bulk pricing is a volume curve, not a single number. Below the mill’s minimum, the sample economics simply apply at a larger scale; at the minimum the fixed costs spread thin enough that the per-metre figure drops sharply; beyond the minimum, further discounts arrive in steps as dye lots and loom time fill completely. Yarn is the other lever: a bulk run that shares its yarn base with another program in the mill buys cheaper than a one-off colour. This is why quotations must state quantity honestly – a price negotiated at 3,000 metres cannot survive an order that lands at 900, and the mill that honours it anyway is cutting the check you will not see: the finishing pass or the inspection round.

Three levers move sample-to-bulk economics. First, sample fee crediting: many mills credit sampling costs against the bulk order once it confirms – ask for the policy in writing before sampling, not after the invoice. Second, quantity integrity: quotes at your real volume, split into colourways, beat optimistic volumes renegotiated later. Third, shared development: if your colour and weight can ride an existing yarn base, the fixed costs shrink for both sides. What does not exist is the free sample of custom cloth; a mill offering it has priced it somewhere you have not read yet.
